Optimizing Biomass
for Everyone and Everything
Billions of humans rely on seafood as a source of protein. A far greater number of organisms and natural ecosystems also rely on seafood to thrive. As our population grows, both of these situations will become more acute. At Blue Innovation Fund, we are committed to the idea that optimizing our global fisheries so that all can thrive.
Translating this belief into an investment strategy makes us look across the entire fisheries ecosystem for ways to further optimize our existing systems. The questions we ask ourselves cover a wide range:
Are the ecosystems needed for maximum biomass healthy, productive and free of pollution?
Do we know how much biomass a system can realistically carry, and whether that threshold is being met?
How, when and how much of that biomass we harvest without damaging the critical balances that ensuring an optimized fishery?
Can part of that harvested biomass be replaced with non-wild solutions such as aquaculture or lab grown seafood?
Once harvested, how can we optimize 100% of that harvest, as well as create value from that biomass that means industries and livelihoods can grow without overharvesting resources?
