How Do We Move Things Via Water Without Consequence?

For millennia, humans have used water for the movement of people and things.  Starting with small human powered crafts which evolved into larger wind power to our now massive fossil fuel vessels, the maritime industry has always played a key role in how humans interact with the world and each other.  And for all of that time, little if any thought has been given to the consequences of these interactions.

But now we know better. We know maritime emissions contribute 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.  We know maritime vessels have a meaningful impact on the species that call the water home.   Most importantly, we know we can do better.

Our Maritime investment strategy focuses on doing better…continuing to enable commerce, transportation, and global connection…but without the consequences.  This leads us to ask a variety of questions:

• Can we move boats without fossil fuels?

• If so, what is the required transition in vessel design and port infrastructure?

• What can vessels be built from?

• While we are transitioning to this future, what is required to reduce maritime’s current impact?

• What happens when a vessel reaches the end of its useful life?
